The narrator, who remains unnamed throughout the story, enters a cave with an unspecified companion looking for pirate treasure. They find various bones and other debris on the floor of the cave. Further inside they discover a human skeleton sitting against the wall with its hand clutching a piece of gold. The narrator takes the gold from the skeleton’s hand and places it in his own pocket. As he does so, he hears a loud noise coming from deeper inside the cave. His companion runs back outside in terror, leaving him alone.
